Show Notes

It's a rare excursion outside of Manitoba for a chat with Rob Piquette, one of the hosts of Checkered Past: A Ska'd Cast.

We talked podcasting, the past, present and future of ska music — including, of course, his views on Winnipeg’s ska scene growing up in Alberta — and much more!

It’s a departure from the usual (very Manitoba-centric) guests I have on the show, but I had a blast with Rob (and his sister and co-host Celine) last year on an episode of their show about JFK & the Conspirators, so I wanted to return the favour.

This episode brought to you by our pals at Devine Shirt Company.

Huge thanks to everyone who supports the podcast on Patreon! You can help out for as little as $1 a month if you like the show and want to throw some change in the guitar case! You can also throw a one-time tip via Buymeacoffee.

WR479: Anne-Marie Williot

Happy quarantine! Here's an interview with singer-songwriter-accordionist [Anne-Marie Williot](http://www.manitobamusic.com/annemariewilliot), alongside bassist/tuba player/etc. Ian Cherry. We talked about Anne-Marie’s excellent new record, [Cheval Géant](https://annemariewilliot.bandcamp.com/), which was intended to be released at a big show with a full eight-piece band. Instead, due to social distancing, Anne-Marie and Ian are playing the full album on [Facebook live tonight](http://[[text](http://[text](http://))](http://)www.facebook.com/events/839519293213391/) (assuming you're listening to this on the day it comes out)! WR451: Scatterpattern

Manitoba artist [Scatterpattern](http://scatterpattern.bandcamp.com/) makes electronic music with souped-up old Game Boys. He’s also likely the only local artist with his own action figure! We chat on the podcast about how video games-as-instruments works, his cardboard box-headed stage gear, digital hardcore, chiptune, his new record, '[Outings](http://scatterpattern.bandcamp.com/album/outings)', and much more! This episode is brought to you by our pals at [the Park Theatre](http://www.myparktheatre.com/). It’s also brought to you by [Trevor Fisher](http://www.linkedin.com/in/fishertrevor) of Way2Wealth Management, a local Certified Financial Planner who can help you start planning your financial independence. WR334: Romi Mayes

On this episode, we're ridin' with the queen! Singer-songwriter and rock n' fuckin' roller [Romi Mayes](http://www.facebook.com/Romi-Mayes-Band-Official-Music-Page-110129255685862/) is an integral part of Winnipeg's independent music scene, and we finally have her on the podcast. The timing couldn't be better, too, as she has a LOT going on. If you're listening to this podcast on the day it's released, Romi will be appearing live on your device of choice tonight as part of the [Village Idiots' Live at the Roslyn series](http://www.facebook.com/WeAreTheVillageIdiots/). She's also resurrecting her late-90s country outfit Off the Wagon for [two reunion sets](http://www.facebook.com/events/2288008008079709/) at their old haunt this weekend, and she's working on her annual [Lonely Jew at Christmas](https://www.facebook.com/events/876631569392889/) party. ...and that's just scratching the surface. This episode brought to you by our friends at [the Park Theatre](http://myparktheatre.com/). Thanks to everyone who has supported the podcast thus far. Thanks to supporters like you, we can keep churning out interviews twice a week!
