Show Notes

Cellist and composer [Rob Knaggs](http://www.robknaggs.com/) may hail from Brisbane, Australia, but his real home is on the icy shores of northern Manitoba. Rob is a frequent visitor to Churchill, where his lifelong dream of performing his cinematic post-rock compositions for Arctic wildlife like belugas and polar bears can be fulfilled. Before Rob's next lengthy stay up north, he's playing one last Winnipeg show, [May 16 at the West End Cultural Centre](http://www.facebook.com/events/1499918810121015/) opening up for Tim Hecker. This episode brought to you by the [release party for 'Quiet Dreams'](http://www.facebook.com/events/207263916702467/) the new album by local indie rockers (and past Witchpolice guests) Hearing Trees. The event, presented by our friends at the Park Theatre, takes place May 25 at the Good Will Social Club, with guests The Perms, Micah Erenberg and Sophie Stevens. The episode is also brought to you by [Fourth Quarter Records](http://www.fourthquarterrecords.com/), your home for the best local hip-hop, as well as merchandise like the glorious 3Peat hoodies you've been seeing everywhere lately.

WR266: Panicland

They may be one of the youngest acts we've ever had on the podcast, but they're already one of the most popular. Up-and-coming pop foursome [Panicland](http://www.panicland.net/) have leveraged an innate understanding of 21st century music consumption, a busy social media regimen, and sweet, sweet hooks into huge success so far... and they're only getting started. The fellas talk about their punk rock roots (and you can hear some early tracks on this episode, along with recent hits), their take on DIY, the new album they have in the works, and much, much more! Brought to you by our friends at the Park Theatre, who are hosting [Desi Sub Culture](http://www.facebook.com/events/119650228746060/) on Jan. 20, presented by the Winnipeg Folk Festival. Tickets for this global dance show are $25 at Ticketmaster and at the Winnipeg Folk Festival office. This episode also brought to you by the [first Record Sundaze of 2018](http://www.facebook.com/events/160278271273058/), taking place Jan. 21 at PEG Beer Co. and featuring Eye and Ear Control, Dub Ditch Picnic, Eat 'Em Up Records and Electric Heat Records! WR116: None the Wiser

This week, Sam drops in on **[None the Wiser](http://www.nonethewiser.ca/)** singer/guitarist **Eli Matas** to drink non-alcoholic beers, talk “intensity” songs and more! None the Wiser is a folk/funk/psychedelic/rock/party machine with well over a decade of history and a new release called _[Smoke and Mirrors](http://www.nonethewiser.ca/#!music/c21jp) _ (which has glorious cover art, by the way). If you're listening to this on the day it's released, these guys are also playing _tonight_ at Ozzy's in Winnipeg as part of New Music Wednesdays. Check 'em out! ...

WR511: 'The Manitoba Connection'

There’s an excellent new (old) documentary out now about Winnipeg’s mid-‘00s hardcore scene, called [*The Manitoba Connection*](http://www.zellcoproductions.com/projects/the-manitoba-connection/). Here's a conversation with two guys whose bands were integral parts of that scene — Cam Scott (Under Pressure) and Russ Wardell (DSC, Hard Boiled). We talked about the film (directed by [Brian Barnhart](http://www.imdb.com/name/nm7224707/?ref_=tt_ov_dr)), their experiences in that tight-knit musical community, bands that time forgot, reflections on punk rock and society, and a whole lot more. I included some tracks in here by the likes of Under Pressure, [Hard Boiled](http://winnipeghardcorearchive.bandcamp.com/album/hard-boiled-demo-1998), [The Insaniacs](http://theinsaniacs.bandcamp.com/), and [Fuckmorgue](http://eyeandearcontrol.bandcamp.com/album/dead-i-will-not-be-forgotten). Check out the film today on Amazon Prime! This episode brought to you by [Lana Winterhalt](http://lanawinterhalt.bandcamp.com/), [Sean Burns](http://seanburns.bandcamp.com/), and [Unscripted Moments](http://unscriptedmoments.libsyn.com/)! Don’t forget to check out some socially-distanced shows at [the Park Theatre](http://www.myparktheatre.com/), who have slowly reopened after a long COVID-19 closure. Huge thanks to everyone who supports the podcast on [Patreon](http://www.patreon.com/witchpolice). You can help out for as little as $1 a month if you like the show and want to throw some change in the guitar case! ...
