Show Notes

This week’s guests are Winnipeg graphic novelist and comic book creator GMB Chomichuk and electronic bleep n’ blooper Mike Zastre, a/k/a/ The Iron Buddha.

The episode’s theme is “sailor,” but the fellas go deep on comic books, field recordings and the DIY punk rock aesthetic. The Iron Buddha performs live and gives a mid-show demonstration of how he uses a cell phone to construct beats.

WR196: The Big Mix-Up 2

The Big Mix-Up is back! Our second instalment of the popular (in our own minds) local musical improv event was held Aug. 29 at Winnipeg's historic Park Theatre. We wiped the slate clean after the first Mix-Up and started with a completely fresh group of musicians. The premise of the show is that musicians' names are drawn out of a hat and made to form randomized 'bands'. The bands then perform improvised songs onstage based on audience suggestions of genre and topic. Like the first version of the show, this one starts a little rough, but once the musicians get a feel for the show, we ended up with some outstanding performances. Stay tuned for details on our next Big Mix-Up coming soon! This edition of the show featured the following musicians: Casimir Gruwel (tenor sax), Daniel "Bartley Knives" Guezen (guitar, vocals, drums), Kumaran Reddy (bass, vocals), Brett Ticzon (bass, guitar), Brian Gluck (drums), Peter Vander Hout (baritone sax, vocals), J Riley Hill (drums, guitar), Kaeleigh Ayre (Moog, vocals), Paul Pilgrim (guitar), Ashley Bieniarz (keyboard, vocals), KittyKittie (vocals), Tim Haverluck (guitar, vocals), and Darin Rudd (guitar, bass, vocals). ...

WR706: Mouth Feel

Last time I did a Mouth Feel episode, it was a goddamn disaster due to a corrupted audio file. This time, though, we’re good.I talked to Matt (bass/vocals) about the band’s upcoming new record, being old punks, finding their ‘people’ in the local scene, and much more. This episode brought to you by our pals at Devine Shirt Company, who have brand new Witchpolice merch in the works! Watch for that! Huge thanks to everyone who supports the podcast on Patreon! You can help out for as little as $1 a month if you like the show and want to throw some change in the guitar case! You can also throw a one-time tip via Buymeacoffee. As always, if you like the podcast, please tell a friend or 20! Rate and review on your podcast player of choice! Word of mouth is still the main way Witchpolice Radio reaches new ears. Thanks for listening! ...

WR175: Bartley Knives

This week, we talk to the hilariously-named Bartley Knives about his solo project, "volcanic" songs, a sense of place in song lyrics, campus radio and a lot more. A past guest on this show in early 2015, "Bartley" is best known as a member of local acts like The New Wild and Sibyl. Under his current guise, he's exploring songs that were too strange for his other bands. ...
